French Placement Exam

Your Passport to France and the Francophone World

Examination Information
Students who have had previous study of French and intend to continue in the language must take the French Placement exam to determine which French course to register for at Manhattanville College.

Students may take the French placement examination only once.

The purpose of this exam is to provide individualized testing, to identify your ability level using combinations of grammar, reading, and vocabulary questions. Please complete the placement examination to the best of your ability, without the use of textbooks, dictionaries, or any other type of assistance.

The French Department will review the results of the placement examination in conjunction with other information. The Department reserves the right to change your placement in a course if it believes that you have not been placed in the most appropriate course based on your exposure to French. If this exam places you in FRN 1001 but you have studied French for 2 or more years at the high school level you SHOULD register for FRN 1002. After you finish the exam, register for the appropriate French course with your academic advisor. Students should make a note of their placement score for their records. After consulting with your academic advisor, you should sign up for the section that best fits your schedule.
