News from the Center For Career Development
Congratulations to the parents and families of the Class of 2010 With your support, your students have developed important work and life skills during their years at Manhattanville College that will help them succeed in jobs or graduate school placements. We wish them the best of luck as they find their own unique career path in life. As Manhattanville alumni, career services are available to them throughout their lifetime. We are just a mouse click or phone call away.
Our staff is here to help students and alumni throughout the summer months, Monday – Friday, from 9AM – 5 PM, to answer any career questions or concerns. Students can contact the office by either calling 914-323-5484 or via email at careers@mville.edu. Please encourage them to look at our website regularly for updated news about career fairs, career tips and career resources. Updated daily, Experience (http://mville.experience.com), our campus job database, is a good place to begin to search for full and part-time employment, as well as internships.
There are ways that you can support your son or daughter’s job search efforts:
· Be patient. Finding a job may take time. Encourage your student to develop a formal plan to look for a job to make the most of his/her time. Waking up early in the morning, scheduling specific job search time, doing something fun as a reward for job searching and identifying networking resources will pay off.
· Encourage your student to network with people you know. Students can learn so much by talking with professionals already working in the field. Informational interviews can sometimes lead to job offers! At least 80% of all jobs are found through networking. That means about 20% of jobs are found through other means.
· Suggest finding opportunities that are unpaid. If your student can’t find a paid job after looking for a period of time, volunteer positions and unpaid internships provide skill development, experience and industry connections that may eventually lead to a great job. It is better to develop your career network and skills in an unpaid situation than to sit home.
· Be a career resource for other Manhattanville students. Remember how grateful you were when someone gave you your first break? If you know of a job opening or internship for either the summer or fall semesters, you could be that person to jumpstart another person’s career.
