Configure Network Software for Windows or Macintosh
Most computers can connect to Manhattanville's network with their default settings. If yours doesn't work, try the procedures below for your operating system.
Windows 2000
- Click on the Start menu, select Settings and then choose Network and Dial-up Connections.
- In the Network and Dial-up Connections window, double-click on the Local Area Connection icon and then Properties.
- In the Local Area Connection Properties window, if Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is listed, make sure the box next to it contains a check mark, and proceed to step 8.
- If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not listed, click on Install.
- In the Select Network Component Type, double-click Protocol.
- In the Select Network Protocol window, Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click OK.
- Make sure the box beside Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) contains a check mark.
- Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.
- In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click the Advanced button and then click the DNS tab.
- Remove any DNS server addresses listed.
- Click OK, click OK in the Local Area Connection window and click Close in the Local Area Status window.
- Close the Network and Dial-up Connections window.
- Right click on My Computer.
- Click on the Network Identification tab and click Properties.
- Enter your last name followed by your first initial for your Computer name. For example, Jane Jones would enter jonesj for the computer name. Select Workgroup and enter dorms in the box.
- Click OK twice and restart the computer.
- Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, and Internet Options.
- Click the Connections tab and select the Never dial a connection button.
- Click the LAN Settings button, uncheck all three boxes and then click OK twice.
Windows XP
- Click on the Start menu, and right-click on My Network Places. Click on Properties.
- In the Network Connections window, double-click on the Local Area Connection icon and then Properties.
- In the Local Area Connection Properties window, if Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is listed, make sure the box next to it contains a check mark, and proceed to step 8.
- If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not listed, click on Install.
- In the Select Network Component Type, double-click Protocol.
- In the Select Network Protocol window, Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click OK.
- Make sure the box beside Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) contains a check mark.
- Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.
- In the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window, select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click the Advanced button and then click the DNS tab.
- Remove any DNS server addresses listed, and click OK twice.
- If the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks box is checked, you may want to uncheck it if you do not want others to be able to access your shared folders and printers.
- Click OK in the Local Area Connection window and click Close in the Local Area Status window.
- Close the Network Connections window.
- Click on the Start menu, and right-click on My Computer. Click on Properties.
- Click on the Computer Name tab and click Change…
- Enter your last name followed by your first initial for your Computer name. For example, Jane Jones would enter jonesj for the computer name. Select Workgroup and enter dorms in the box.
- Click OK twice and restart the computer.
- Click on the Start menu, and right-click on Internet Explorer. Click on Internet Properties.
- Click the Connections tab and select the Never dial a connection button.
- Click the LAN Settings button, uncheck all three boxes and then click OK twice.
Mac OS 10.x
- In the upper left corner on the desktop, click the Apple icon, and choose System Preferences from the menu.
- Click the Network icon, and keep the default setting of Automatic in the Location pop-up menu.
- Choose Built-in Ethernet from the Show pop-up menu.
- In the Configure pop-up menu, select Using DHCP.
- Click Apply now in the lower right corner. Do not change the other settings from the default.
- In the upper left corner of the Network settings window, click Show All.
- Click the Sharing icon. Enter your last name followed by your first initial for your Computer name. For example, Jane Jones would enter jonesj for the Computer Name.
- Enter the same name in the Rendezvous Name box.
- From the System Preferences menu, click Quit System Preferences.
