Eligibility

Students who have completed their Sophomore year (60 credits) may receive academic credit for an Internship.

International Students must have approval from the Office of International Student Services (OISS) prior to starting a paid OR unpaid Internship.

Non-credit internships can be completed at any time during a student’s college experience.

Students may not receive credit for the same Internship twice.  Students may work at the same company if they change departments or are promoted within their department.  The Internship experience has to be significantly different.

Students may only receive 9 credits towards Internships during their college career at Manhattanville.

Consultation

All students who wish to receive credit must attend an orientation meeting at the beginning of the semester.  If you cannot attend one of the scheduled orientations, you must schedule a 15-minute individual consultation with our office to begin the Internship Program.  Call the office at 914-323-5484 to set up an appointment.

Faculty Advisor

Students must find a full-time faculty member to sign off on the internship, advise the student during the Internship and submit a grade for the course. This is your Faculty Internship Advisor and is not necessarily the same as your regular Advisor.  Not every professor is authorized to be a Faculty Internship Advisor.  Contact the CCD or your major department if you need assistance in obtaining a Faculty Internship Advisor.

Registration

At their consultation, students will receive an Internship Kit.  This includes all information and paperwork needed during the Internship Program.

To register, students need to complete the Learning Agreement and the Registration Form.

The Learning Agreement must be signed by:

  • The Student
  • The Faculty Advisor
  • The On-Site Supervisor (the direct supervisor at the Internship)
  • The Director of the Office of International Student Services (if the student is an International Student).

The Registration Form must be signed by the Faculty Advisor.

Once all of these signatures are obtained, the student brings both forms to the CCD for Career Development Approval (the final signature on the Registration Form).  The student must then bring the completed Registration Form to the Registrar.
Note: It is highly recommended that students request copies of all paperwork and keep them in their Internship Kits!

Credit Verification For Your Employer

Some employers require a letter from Manhattanville stating that you can or will receive credit for your Internship.  Make sure you know which letter your employer needs:

Credit Likely Letter: This letter states that you are eligible to receive credit for your Internship and that upon registration you will receive these credits.  This letter can be generated for you at any time during the registration process.

Credit Letter: This letter states that you will definitely receive credit for your Internship and can only be issued after you register with the Registrar.

During The Semester

All students receiving credit for their Internships must attend a mandatory Mid-Semester Progress Meeting at the CCD.  These are group sessions of 5-10 students. If you need to speak with us individually about your Internship you can set up an appointment at any time or speak with us after your Check-In, but you MUST also attend this meeting.

Your Mid-Semester Progress Meeting date is chosen during your initial consultation.  Should you need to change the date for any reason, you must contact our office in advance.

Withdrawals

If for any reason you decide to withdraw your Internship for credit during the semester, you MUST inform our office, after withdrawing through the Registrar and notifying your Faculty Advisor, and your employer if necessary.

End Of Semester

Toward the end of the semester all students must complete a Student Internship Placement Evaluation Form analyzing their Internship.  Employers must complete a Supervisor Evaluation Form of each student’s performance.  These forms must be turned in to the CCD prior to the deadline date to receive a grade for the course. See the Deadlines section to make sure you are on track.

Summer Internships

Because for-credit Internships are registered as courses through the Registrar’s office, students must pay Summer per-credit tuition if they wish to receive credit for their Summer Internship.  Contact the Registrar’s office for pricing details.

Summer Internships are registered during Summer Session II, regardless of work dates.
