Choosing a Major
There are many professionals at the College who can assist with the choice of a major:
- Faculty
- Advisors in the Academic Advising Office
- Career Counselors
It is probably a good idea to have conversations with all of these when deciding on a major. In a liberal arts environment, almost all majors can lead to good, stimulating employment after graduation. The choice of the major should be based upon interest in the subject matter and desire to learn and read extensively about it.
In the Center for Career Development, there is a binder entitled "What to do with a major in…" It offers possible career paths and internship opportunities for most academic disciplines. Appointments with career counselors to discuss interests and goals are also useful in determining an appropriate major and minor.
There are books available in our Career Resource Library that may be helpful. Examples are: "Careers for Foreign Language Aficionados," "Great Jobs for Psychology Majors," and "Careers for History Buffs."
There is a series entitled: "What can I do with a Major in…" by the Career Center at Washington University in St. Louis, and one by the University of Virginia called: "Choosing and Using Your Major," that could also be helpful.
