Manhattanville College's Inkwell:
At a Theater Near You!

PURCHASE, N.Y. (November 7, 2006) – Inkwell, the literary journal published in affiliation with Manhattanville College’s Master of Arts in Writing program, will be featured in Stranger Than Fiction, a new film opening this week. Moviegoers can spy copies of the nationally recognized journal strewn about Dustin Hoffman’s desk and office in the comedy, which also stars Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Queen Latifah. The plotline involves the life of Harold Crick, an average guy who doesn’t know that he is really a character in a novel.

2006-11-10“We’re proud to see Inkwell, receive this kind of recognition,” said Manhattanville College President Richard A. Berman. “Inkwell is a nationally known and critically acclaimed literary journal that speaks to the caliber of Manhattanville’s Master of Arts in Writing program.”

Why Inkwell? Because, as quoted in a review on NewPages.com’s Literary Magazine Stand, “Inkwell deserves the kind of ubiquity enjoyed by The New Yorker and The Atlantic Monthly, deserves to be laid proudly on coffee tables everywhere.”

Why in this movie? “Sony Pictures saw the NewPages.com review and asked us to send them copies of the journal,” says Inkwell Editor Alex Lindquist.

Inkwell is published biannually by students in Manhattanville’s Master of Arts in Writing program and showcases a mix of literary and contemporary work. Past contributors have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. Last year, the journal received more than 4,700 submissions from across the country and around the world.

The journal attracts renowned poets and fiction writers as its competition judges. This year, Award-Winning Author Joan Silber will judge fiction entries and Author and New Yorker Poetry Editor Alice Quinn will judge poetry competition entries. “Our star may be on the rise, but it’s all about continuing to publish quality writing and working to make Inkwell even better,” Lindquist says. “Be sure to go see the movie—and when you see Dustin Hoffman, look closely for the black issue of Inkwell with the yellow lion on the cover!”
