The School of Graduate and Professional Studies Announces a new M.S. Degree in Sport Business Management.
February 2, 2007
Manhattanville College recently announced a new Master's degree in Sport Business Management. The program, offered by Manhattanville's School of Graduate and Professional Studies, will prepare students to assume leadership positions in a variety of high-growth markets ranging from sports-related marketing and sponsorships to management of professional sports, intercollegiate athletics, facilities and events.
Manhattanville's program is the only graduate-level sport business management program in Westchester and Fairfield counties. Dave Torromeo, a resident of New Canaan, Connecticut, will direct the Sport Business Management program. Torromeo brings to Manhattanville over 20 years of experience in sports business, including over four years as vice president of Operations for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, and 15 years in collegiate athletics. At the Football Foundation, Torromeo established relationships with many factions of the sports business world from major college football coaches to top administrators from across the country.
Manhattanville College President Richard A. Berman said, "Manhattanville is ahead of the curve in identifying a trend: the growth in the sport management industry and the need for qualified professionals to meet the increase in demand. The business has changed dramatically in the past decade. It has become increasingly sophisticated, encompassing advertising, marketing, licensing, naming rights, sponsorships, and product placement, as well as management of professional athletes, intercollegiate athletics, facilities and events. The program we have designed is interdisciplinary, drawing on the strengths of our programs in integrated marketing communications and leadership and strategic management, as well as the fundamentals of the sports business."
The Manhattanville College M.S. in Sport Business Management is designed for sport marketing and management professionals, as well as business people who seek a career in the sports industry and recent college graduates who aspire to a career in the field. The curriculum will include an internship, which will give students an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learned while networking in the industry.
