Meeting New Challenges in Continuing Education
By Sheila Smith Drapeau

Manhattanville College takes a practical learning approach.  It has offered Master of Science in Business degrees since 1992, the first degree was an MS in Organizational Development & Human Resources Management.  With courses covering an MS in Leadership & Strategic Management; MS in Integrated Marketing Communications degree; MS in International Management; and an MS in Sport Business Management, the school offers these classes, with the exception of the Sports Management Degree, only on weekends in order to accommodate the schedules of busy corporate executives and consultants who teach the courses.

Manhattanville students must have full time work experience to be accepted into these programs and the courses focus on practical learning to prepare students to handle real issues.  While students learn theory, they also solve problems they’ll encounter at work.

Ernesto Sanchez, Organizational and People Capability Director at PepsiCo International Foods and Beverages, Latin America, noted that his Manhattanville experience was invaluable.

“The practical approach helped me to take immediate learning and apply it right away in my organization,” he said, noting that he has been at the company for 11 years with 22 years of experience in Organization and People development.  “This was especially easy for me as my job responsibilities are directly related with the MS (Master of Science degree) content.  For example, I enhanced a team-building program, redesigned the way we created a ‘values culture’, and incorporated new assessment tools to our staffing process.  Academically, the course study was influential.  I had a great update on the latest theories and models around leadership and organization development.  My final (Manhattanville) paper is now part of the pre-readings for a change management program at PepsiCo.”
