Manhattanville College Chorus Performs at Congregation Emanu-El
4.30.2007
The Manhattanville College Chorus joined with the Taghkanic Chorale to perform Randall Thompson's The Peaceable Kingdom at Congregation Emanu-El of Westchester for the 22nd Annual Tribute Service for Cantor Earl Rogers. Under the leadership of Martin Rutishauser, who is Musical Director of both choruses, the combined group of 80 singers sang Thompson's work to the honor Earl RogersŐs long service to the congregation.
The Peaceable Kingdom was composed in 1935 for the Harvard Glee Club and the Radcliffe Choral Society and was inspired by the painting "The Peaceable Kingdom" by Edward Hicks. Hicks had drawn inspiration from the biblical passage by the prophet Isaiah:
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. And the suckling child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice's den. Isaiah 11:6-9.
