Research has identified strength in algebraic and geometric thinking as part of the key difference between high achieving and low achieving nations in mathematics. However, studies have shown that students struggle with complex mathematical concepts, especially during the Middle Grades. The key to raising these achievement levels in mathematics is to improve students’ mathematical thinking. Inquiry based mathematics teaching, for which Kay Toliver is noted, provides students with the essential foundation for understanding abstract mathematical concepts. This is essential as more concepts in algebra and geometry are being introduced in the elementary through middle grades to develop higher order mathematical thinking and understanding and to enhance problem solving ability.

Join Kay Toliver for two days as she shares proven instructional methods for helping students develop higher level competencies in mathematics.

Participants in this two-day program will:
*  explore hands-on and inquiry based methods of mathematics teaching with the focus on algebra and geometry,
*  examine strategies for integrating mathematics with communication and representation,
*  gain insight into the important connection between comprehending mathematical language and success on assessments,
*  enhance their knowledge about effective questioning techniques that reveal how deeply students understand content and skills, and
*  learn how good questions provide ongoing assessment of student learning.

Kay Toliver's educational philosophy is simple: “All students can achieve at high levels. It is a teacher's job to expand minds and take children from the known to the unknown”. Born and raised in East Harlem and the South Bronx, Ms. Toliver is a product of the New York City Public Schools. She received both her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Hunter College and has performed graduate level work in Mathematics at City College in New York. Becoming a teacher was the fulfillment of a childhood dream. For more than 30 years Ms. Toliver taught Mathematics and Communication Arts at East Harlem's P.S. 72. Her approach to classroom excellence has become a national model. She is featured in four critically acclaimed videos, including the Peabody Award winning Good Morning, Miss Toliver. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the 1992 Presidential Award in Secondary Mathematics (on the state and national level) and the Reliance Award for Excellence in Education.

In 2001, Kay Toliver officially retired from classroom teaching but has continued her work in professional development, presenting workshops and keynote addresses to over 25,000 educators in the past six years.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: October 4, 2007
