2007 Athletics Award Banquet

The Valiants unveiled and honored their annual departmental award winners Monday, April 24 at the Manhattanville Castle, recognizing 10 outstanding contributors to the program and looking back on the most successful academic year in the history of the college.

The senior class that will graduate in the spring is the most successful in the program’s history, making 11 trips to the NCAA Tournament, more than the combined total of the previous nearly 40 years of athletics at the college. Through the completion of eight intercollegiate seasons this year, the Valiants have made three NCAA Tournament appearances, won three regular season conference titles, four conference tournament titles and had four league Coaches of the Year, two All-Americans, two All-Region selections and 13 All-Conference performers.

The following are the winners of the 2006-07 Manhattanville College Athletic Awards:

Male Athlete of the Year
Andrew Gallant – Sr., Men’s Hockey
National Division III Player of the Year, ECAC West Player of the Year, Manhattanville’s all-time leader in every statistical goalie category, led team to first Frozen Four in school history and 11-week run at #1 in nation.

Female Athlete of the Year
Michele Ribeiro – Sr., Women’s Soccer & Softball (pictured)
All-Region and All-Conference keeper owns several soccer records, carried soccer team to first ECAC Metro Tournament Championship and seven-win turnaround from previous season, 2006 Skyline Conference Softball Player of the Year, 2005-06 Manhattanville Female Athlete of the Year.

Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Chris Mills – Sr., Men’s Hockey
Set Manhattanville’s single-season point and assist record, captain of winningest hockey team in program history, 3.77 grade point average, major is political science.

Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Laura McDowell – Sr., Women’s Tennis
Manhattanville’s all-time winningest doubles player, led team to three straight Skyline Conference championships, 3.91 grade point average, major is business management.

Male Rookie of the Year
Paul Blejec – Fr., Baseball
Leading team and Skyline Conference in batting (.432),started 27 games at shortstop.

Female Rookie of the Year
Kathryn Moore – Fr., Women’s Soccer & Softball
ECAC Metro Tournament Most Valuable Player (soccer), leading team in batting (.430), doubles and stolen bases in softball.

Humanitarian Award
Dani Poupart – Jr., Women’s Hockey
Works with Duschene Center on campus and serves regularly at New York soup kitchens.

Athletic Director’s Award
Sarah Kinsley – Sr., Women’s Soccer, Women’s Basketball & Softball
Four-year letterwinner in all three sports, remained valuable part of all three teams as senior despite debilitating injuries during fall and winter seasons.

Valiant Plaque
Steve & Margaret Harris
Active supporters of all Valiant athletic teams, a constant presence during all three seasons, mainstays at men’s hockey practices in early morning hours.

Sports Medicine Student-Athlete of the Year
Amanda Nonis – Jr., Women’s Hockey & Softball
Opted for surgery on hand injury that required placement of a screw in order to return to hockey lineup quicker, went on to lead team to ECAC East Tournament Championship.
