I was an elementary and middle school science teacher before coming to Manhattanville College, and have also enjoyed several years as a museum educator. I bring these experiences as an educator into my courses and my research. My research interests focus on preservice and inservice preparation for the teaching of science. I am currently exploring the role that supported, shared teaching experiences can have in the development of new teacher identity. In particular, I am examining my own field-based methods courses in which new teachers learn to teach by teaching. In these courses, I co-teach lessons with the preservice teachers and a second grade teacher. These experiences provide for multiple perspectives and ground my work in an authentic setting. Through this research, I am focusing on the emerging possibilities for identity transformation as the teachers begin to enact new roles in the classroom. I am a doctoral student in the Urban Education program with a concentration in science education and am currently working on my dissertation research, which focuses on the role of authentic teacher preparation on pre-service teachers. I have been presenting at numerous national conferences about the impacts of the courses that I teach on the participants.
