Grading & Credit

A student must earn a specified number of credits (a minimum of 120 credits) in order to graduate from Manhattanville. This number may vary slightly in different majors or programs. Information about graduation requirements can also be found in the Manhattanville catalog. The number of credits a course is worth usually depends on the number of hours per week that it meets. A three-credit course, for example, will normally meet approximately three hours weekly for one (15-week) semester. At the end of the semester, the student who has achieved a passing grade (a D in a non-major course, a C- or C (depending on the program) in a major or minor course) has earned three credits or three credit-hours.

Each professor should distribute a course syllabus that provides the basis for the evaluation of work in that particular course. Students should attend all scheduled class meetings, arrive prepared to review and discuss assigned material, and should respect the educational environment of the classroom by turning off all pagers, cellphones, or other devices that could distract the class.

The final grade for each course is furnished to the student on the Grade Report available at the end of the semester through your Student Information System. Grade points are the numerical value assigned to each letter grade for comparative purposes. Letter grades A through F correspond to numbers 4 to 0, respectively, with 4 being the highest (Excellent). The GPA is the average of grade points per semester hour for each student. GPAs are computed for each semester individually and cumulatively for all semesters combined. GPAs are used as a basis for completing requirements for graduation or for permission to remain in school each succeeding semester. Students must achieve a 2.0 cumulative average in order to graduate. Students who have lower than a 2.0 in any semester may be placed on probation or even dismissed from the College. Read the Manhattanville Catalog for the exact rules regarding probation and dismissal.

Students may choose to take courses on a pass/fail basis, but no more than four credits per semester. If the course is completed with a “Pass”, the student earns the credits, but there is no effect on the student’s GPA; if the course is completed with a “Fail”, the student earns no credits and the grade IS factored into the student’s GPA as an F. Pass/Fail courses cannot be used to satisfy major or minor requirements, but may be used to satisfy College general distribution requirements.
