Academic Integrity
Manhattanville has established and maintains guidelines regarding honesty and academic behavior. New students are expected to become familiar with proper procedures for doing research, writing papers and taking examinations. Failure to act in accordance with proper procedures is considered academic dishonesty.
When doing research and writing papers, one must always acknowledge one’s sources of information. To use information or quote a source without properly acknowledging this contribution is plagiarism. Allowing other students to revise one’s own work can also be construed as academic dishonesty. The College provides assistance for students at the Academic Resource Center (ARC), which is the proper place to receive assistance with one’s work. Of course, taking the work of someone else (e,g, a website or another student’s paper) is clearly academic dishonesty at its worst.
Similarly, looking on another student's paper during an exam or helping another student during an exam is considered cheating.
The penalties for academic dishonesty are severe. Violations of the code of academic integrity almost always result in failure of the test or assignment, usually result in failure of the course, and, if repeated, will result in suspension or dismissal from the College. If a student is unsure about what constitutes academic dishonesty, he/she should ask his/her course instructor or academic advisor. The Student Code of Conduct also outlines the code of academic integrity.
