Music Education
Music has long been considered one of Manhattanville’s strengths. We have had a graduate program in Music Education since 1965. Currently, Manhattanville offers two graduate programs in Music Education leading to initial/professional New York State certification in Music Education, (all grades). Graduates from these programs are prepared to teach Music in all grades from pre-school through 12th grade.
The MAT program in Music Education is designed for candidates who have a bachelors degree or 36 credits in Music including: four courses in Music History or Literature; four courses in Music Theory, one course in (or competence in) woodwind instrument performance, one in brass instrument performance, one in stringed instrument performance, and one course in conducting. No prior education coursework is expected. Entrance requirements for the masters degree program include an Audition and Written Examination offered by the Music Department. This is a 40 credit program.
The Advanced Certification Program in Music Education is designed for candidates who already have a masters degree in Music or a functionally related area and 36 credits in Music including: four courses in Music History or Literature; four courses in Music Theory, one course in (or competence in) woodwind instrument performance, one in brass instrument performance, one in stringed instrument performance, and one course in conducting. This is a 27 credit program.
Required courses in both programs include: Foundations of Education or Introduction to the Multicultural Classroom, Aesthetic Literacy, Literacy in the Content Areas, Introduction to the Exceptional Student, Methods for Early Childhood/Childhood Music, and Methods for Middle Childhood/Adolescence Music. Students must complete 100 hours of Field Experience aligned with their coursework, and a 6 credit student/supervised teaching experience.
The MAT program includes the following additional courses: Resources, Materials and Literature for teaching Instrumental & Vocal Music, Technology for Music Educators, Teaching Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance, Instruction on the Major Performing Medium, and a Music/Education elective course.
The Advanced Certification program includes an additional course in Fundamentals of Middle Childhood Education.
Students in both programs are expected to complete all New York State liberal arts prerequisites, a course in Child Development, required state tests, and required state seminars in Child Abuse and Violence Prevention.
