CELF Summer Sustainability Workshops
This July, Manhattanville College will host the annual CELF Summer Institute, with two sustainability workshops led by the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF). One of the most comprehensive sustainability professional development programs of its kind in the U.S., the CELF Summer Institute is designed to provide the technical and scientific background, the curriculum framework and materials necessary for integrating sustainability education into K-12 schools.

July 6 - 10, 2009
“Are We Educating for a Sustainable Future?”  will take place July 6th through the 10th at Reid Castle on the Manhattanville campus. This full week curriculum development intensive for middle and high school teachers and curriculum coordinators will enhance educators’ understanding of the global issues affecting our planet and show them how to use that knowledge in teaching.

Participants will learn to provide students with the knowledge and approaches they need to contribute to sustainable development and a future that is environmentally healthy, economically sound and socially just.   Click here to learn more. 

July 13 - 15, 2009
"Education for Sustainability: Connecting Children with Nature and Community" for K-5 Educators for K-5 Teachers, Librarians & Administrators will take place July 13th through the 15th.  This CELF Summer Institute for elementary grades is a place for teachers, librarians and administrators to explore strategies that make sustainability learning real, relevant, engaging, local and fun!

Critical Concepts and Subject Knowledge Covered:

  • Interdependence and systems thinking
  • Needs versus wants
  • Connection to and love of place
  • Natural resources and limits
  • Food systems—natural and cultural cycles
  • Social and biological diversity
