Childhood Education

The Childhood Education Program prepares Bachelor’s and Master’s degree candidates for initial teacher certification in grades 1-6.  This program reflects New York State Teacher Certification requirements, the Association of Childhood Education International (ACEI) standards, and Manhattanville’s conceptual framework for teacher preparation. Through this program teacher candidates’ develop their content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and skills. Areas of focus include: curriculum planning, management techniques, assessment, instructional strategies, needs of diverse learners, and using research to inform practice. Candidates enrolled in our program have varied opportunities to integrate theory and practice through fieldwork experiences in a range of settings and student teaching.

Candidates are required to complete 100 hours of fieldwork prior to student teaching experience. Our network of field placements, pre-practica, and student teaching experiences are designed to support course work and help candidates develop skills in focused learning environments.

We offer a traditional teacher education program as well one with a strong field-based component, designed to have teacher candidates in classrooms earlier and for longer periods of time. Courses are offered year round (including Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer semesters). Further, we offer convenient course times (daytime: 9:30 – 3:00 and evenings: 4:20 – 9:15).
