First Annual CSI Educational Forum

Manhattanville launched the Changing Suburbs Institute (CSI) with an Educational Forum that was held at Manhattanville College on June 1, 2006.  Over 70 teachers, administrators, community leaders attended.  Andy Spano, Westchester County Executive, kicked off the event with a welcome.  Dr. David Berliner, Regents’ Professor at Arizona State University and co-author of The Manufactured Crisis, was the keynote speaker.  He spoke about research and promising practices for educating Hispanic students in the Northeast. 

A Panel Discussion addressed topics on educating a diverse student body and ideas to promote educational opportunities for Hispanic students.  The panel was comprised of Dr. Eileen Santiago, Principal, Edison Community School; Mr. Timothy Connors, Superintendent, White Plains School District; Dr. Larry Leverett, Superintendent, Greenwich Public Schools; and Ms. Estee Lopez, Director, Instructional Programs and English Language Learning Instruction, New Rochelle School District.  The panel was moderated by Dr. George Castellanos, Associate Professor, Latin American Studies - Manhattanville College.

Second Annual Forum

The second annual CSI Educational Forum was held on Friday, June 8, 2007 from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm.  Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond, Professor of Education from Stanford University, and Dr. Robert MacNaughton, Superintendent of Ramapo Central School District, were the keynote speakers.  County Executive Andy Spano gave the opening remarks for the event, and Senator Suzi Oppenheimer was the luncheon speaker.

Workshops were held that covered topics pertaining to educating Hispanic students.  Topics included Differentiated Instruction, Cultural Sensitivity, Developmental Stress Disorders, Literacy through the Arts, Professional Development School Project Outcomes, and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol.

One hundred twenty teachers, administrators, community and business organizations, and students attended the event.  This represents almost a 40% growth in attendance from last year’s Educational Forum.

Third Annual Forum

For the Third Annual CSI Educational Forum held on Friday, April 11, 2008, CSI was honored to have Dr. Richard Allington, Professor of Education from The University of Tennessee as the morning Keynote Speaker.  His presentation topic focused on research based principles of why most poor readers remain poor readers.

Workshops were also held on topics that addressed professional development for educators relative to the education if diverse students.

Dr. Jane Gangi, Manhattanville Associate Professor of Literacy leades her workshop on multicultural literacy at the CSI Ed Forum.

Attendees were give the choice of seven workshops on topics that included Parent/Teacher Communications Strategies for Engaging Immigrant Families in American Schooling; Movement Based Learning in Diverse Educational Settings; Building Literacy Through Creating Original Texts; Mentoring Latinas; Critical Literacy Practices; Achievement for Middle School Students; and Multicultural Literature and Literacy Development.

The workshops were delivered by teachers and administrators from Westchester schools, and Manhattanville Faculty.

The premier Manhattanville College choral group, the Quintessentials, performed for the audience during lunch.

The afternoon keynote speaker was Dr. James Garbarino, Professor of Education and Maude C. Clark Chair in Humanistic Psychology at Loyola University.   Dr. Garbarino spoke about the sources of strength and risk for suburban children and youth.
