First Review (Sophomores)

ALL FORMS MUST BE TYPED

Helpful Tip: Use the Portfolio Checklist to assure that you will meet all requirements.

The First Review includes the following:

  • The General Study Plan illustrates on a semester-by-semester basis the courses of proposed study, for all semesters up to graduation. A student’s academic advisor must approve each plan, in addition to the major department chair (if the student is double majoring, the chairs of both majors must sign the form).
  • The Program Evaluation Essay   is a narrative essay explaining The General Study Plan, providing an opportunity for the student to analyze her/his intellectual goals and growth, and to reflect on how the chosen program of courses relates to his/her goals and the mission of the College.
  • The Major/Minor Checklist is a list of all courses taken and projected for major and minor credit. Chairs of major/minor departments must approve each checklist. If a student chooses to double major, a minor is not required; however, the student should complete a separate checklist for each major, leaving the minor area blank.

Students completing a program of study in Education should also complete the Education Major Approval Form, which supplements the Major/Minor checklist used for the liberal arts major.

Students in the Dual Degree Honors Program complete the Dual Degree in Education Approval Form, which lists the liberal arts major and minor courses, in addition to graduate courses and Education co-requisite courses. The major and minor chairs, and the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Advisement in the School of Education must approve each form.
  • The Distribution Worksheet lists all courses used to meet the College's general education requirements.
  • The Writing and Research Competency Form lists the courses used to meet the College's requirements for College-level writing and research. For a complete list of all Writing (W) and Writing with Research (W/R) intensive courses, please click here.
  • The Global Awareness Essay demonstrates the student's plans for gaining greater awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences, as shown in their discussion of at least two courses (for a minimum of six credits) that reflect this goal.
  • Students must submit a minimum of two (2) substantial pieces of writing for their First Review, with an additional two (2) (for a total of at least four (4) required for Final Review. The First Review writing example must include:

    1. Evidence of strong critical/analytical writing skills. A well-done Freshman Essay may be used as an example of this; and,

    2. At least one additional strong example of writing (either critical/analytical or a research project using standard bibliography).

Each submission should include a completed cover sheet.
  • Students should submit supplementary material offering evidence of co-curricular or service activities or other work they consider significant. These materials are welcomed, if they prove especially related to the College’s mission.
